My problem was that I had the brush tool set to color. I figured it out.
Sohora - I see your comment:
Could not use the clone stamp because the area to clone has not been defined (option-click to define a source point).
You have to push down on the option button and then, select a point on the picture that you want as the source point to clone from. From that time forward when you pick an area on the screen, it will copy from an area that is the same distance away as where your source point was on your initial click. I hope that helps.
