Thank you SO much for replying. This has been driving me nuts. I have never done an animated gif so have relied on online tutorials. All seem to mention the "create new layer for each new frame" option that comes from the clicking the little down pointing triangle in the upper right corner. However, I can't see that option and none that I can see (in the screenshot from my original post) seem to do anything. I can't seem to get them into the timeline section as you have above (all the little squares along the bottom). How do I get them from my layers (which I have) into the timeline secrtion?
