Which camera was this shot with? If you are using a compressed format (H.264, AVCHD, etc.), you will have problems like this. To avoid banding, you have to shoot with very little compression. Monochrome backgrounds are subject to banding, so dramatic lighting can prove to be a problem in these cases.
